can’t wait for bloom day!

by Ether

Spring is finally here! The windows are open, the sun is shining, and the flowers are peeking their little faces skyward. I did my best but I just can’t hold it in any longer, I just have to share photos of these lovely blooms.

Crocuses

A nice drizzle of rain left some lovely jewel-like drops on my crocuses, it was just so lovely I had to share. I’m so excited by this garden, it’s full of surprises. Since we moved into the house in August we have no idea what is in the garden for spring. We’re enjoying each day and the new joys that come up every day. First to come up were actually the dwarf irises, with the crocuses only coming up about a week later.

pussywillow bloomsToday brought the first tulip of the season, and a trek into the backyard introduced me to the blooms on the weeping pussy willow. I never knew that pussy willows smelled so sweet when they blooming, now I do. The hydrangeas are making new leaves and leaf-buds, alas some were accidentally cut back this winter and probably won’t bloom since the blooming wood has been removed- oops! Oh well, life continues…

mystery plantThe next big surprise will be finding out what this mystery plant is. While clearing up some of the leaf mulch and cutting out a few bold weeds, I discovered a number of these bright red plant spikes coming up. Anyone know what these might be? To see a larger version of the photo for better analysis, it’s available on flickr.

Are there groups of the red spikes coming up, or just one?

  2. Ether Says:

Carol- they aren’t clumping, but there are more than one of them. They’re about 3 inches apart between the two closest, and the rest are about 6 inches apart or more.

They’re on the side of the garden which gets morning sun but is otherwise a shade spot.

    Those flowers are beautiful!

I’m not sure what that mystery plant will be, but it’ll be fun to find out!

Hi there, Ether! I’m just now making the Bloom Day rounds, and I see that spring has finally made an appearance in your part of PA. Your crocus shot is a beauty. I’d guess that your red shoots look like peony buds. Is that a possibility?

  5. Ether Says:

Nan- Dad said that too, that they might be Peony buds. I didn’t recall seeing any Peony foliage when we moved in, but Mom seems to think that some folk cut that back when the blooms are done? What craziness is this?!

I do love me some Peonies, so here’s to hoping!

  6. Carol, May Dreams Gardens Says:

Peonies was my first guess on that red sprout, which is why I asked if there was just one or several. If several, I think it is more likely it is peony.

Thanks for the early bloom day post!
